Review: A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this book and consider it worth the read. However, I say that with some restrictions.

-You should not read this book if you aren’t willing to devote yourself to a series. This book can’t stand alone. It is essentially a primer laying ground work as nothing is resolved within the 800 some odd pages.

-There are too many characters! The story itself is told from about 7 or 8 different people and that’s not including the minor players in the game…at times it get confusing and really there are a lot of other back stories that make you feel a bit lost.

With those two things being said, I still highly recommend the read. The story is wonderful and the character development is pretty good (if not jumpy)

Lies they tell you about being married…

“Don’t go to bed angry”

I find this to be one of those crazy lofty ideas that people feel bad that they can’t live up to. You always know at least one couple that will sit there and say the live by this motto. Personally, I think it’s a load a crap. And if you don’t believe then I want you to look at a tired kindergartner kid way past nappy nap time. The tantrums alone could be used as secrete weapons of defense in a world was.

I don’t know about you but the act of being tired and running on low is enough to make anyone cranky and pick a fight. And guess what? My husband and I are no different. Sleep is a very important part of life. It regulates your health, both physically AND mentally. And really the only time my husband and I really fight is when one or both of us has been over taxed and dealing with a lack of sleep.

With that being said putting off sleep to try to remedy a problem actually is counter intuitive as you end up suffering more loss in vital snooze time…only escalating the cranky factor.

You kinda feel like a bad person if you go to bed angry. And while you lay in bed waiting for your heart rate to come down so you can go to sleep you sit there and wonder “Am I a bad person cause I want to wait till tomorrow?” I say “NO” you’re not a bad person. You are reasonable and logical person. It’s smart to to take time and back away from a fight. Give both yourself and the other person some space to cool their heels. And an opportunity to not lash out just to be spiteful (cause you know at 2am you’re not thinking straight, right?)

So, I change the above statement to “Sleep on it”

Remember this isn’t only true for marriages but most relationship. You are allowed for “time outs” and a chance to think.

Can’t look away…

I just finished watching The Stoning of Soraya M.

It was definitely a hard movie to watch at times. The build up to the stoning is so slow and gradual and you are waiting for it to happen. But then when it finally gets to it you feel like it’s taking a life time to happen. You want it to be over with.
For any who feel I may have just given a spoiler away…suck it. That’s the name of the movie. It’s like Snakes on a plain. Besides, I really can’t say that there are spoilers or not to this movie. There really is in essence not even a plot. It’s based on a true story. It’s a moment in someone’s life. A very sad and tragic moment. The purpose of the film is awareness of this issue, the mistreatment of women. The brutal act of stoning. Its gut wrenching and not for the faint of heart.
But I will say that at the end, when the story-teller, Soraya’s aunt, succeeds in showing the lies and knowing that you are watching this movie because of her determination is amazing!

If you are passionate about women’s issues though I highly recommend watching this movie. It maybe hard to stomach but we can’t ignore things just because they aren’t pleasent.

Why does he always insist on sitting on my books?

Review: Something Borrowed

Something Borrowed (Darcy & Rachel, #1)Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What to day? This book sums up atleast one friendship in every girl’s life. That one friend who you constantly feel douped by. Though at times it is hard to say who to feel sorry for. It’s easy to relate to both women. And in fact only a few pages in to the next book it makes it a bit harder. Deffently a summer read for dredging up the nostalgia of childhood friends.
